At Workhorse, we love a baked good, and we often bring a hearty stack in for our members (pay special attention to the kitchen on Fridays—you heard it here first) as a little appreciation treat. So, after about six years of operation and hundreds of pastries consumed, it seemed like a good time to round up our favorite places to purchase fatty, sugary life-affirming carbs.
Take these recommendations and treat yourself! You deserve some deliciousness in your life, especially because we already know you work super hard. From darlings to cookies, sourdough loaves to frosted cakes, we have your sweet tooth covered. (Don’t forget to brush!)
Behold, our alphabetical guide to the best bakeries north of Seattle—with special emphasis on Edmonds, of course:

- Kaffeeklatsch Seattle
- Cakes by Frosted

- Rise and Shine Bakery
Cottage, Community Bakery, Edmonds

If there’s one bakery we could survive on alone, it’s Cottage. Conor O’Neill and his team have completely won us over—so much so that our owner is usually the one making Cottage runs because he just can’t get enough. What started as a driveway bread stand in Lynnwood in 2019 has grown into a full-fledged storefront in Perrinville, but the heart of it all hasn’t changed: community. Conor learned old-world bread-making techniques in Paris, came home, and started baking naturally-leavened loaves using locally-milled flours from the Palouse. Now you can find everything from their iconic Country Sourdough and Dad’s Deli Rye to Bavarian Pretzels, brioche, focaccia, and pastries that’ll ruin you for all other pastries. And if you see them at the Edmonds Farmers Market, they’re the ones handing out free pretzel knots to kids every weekend, because that’s just who they are. Open Wednesday through Sunday, starting at 8 a.m.—get there early, because the good stuff goes fast.

Kaffeeklatsch Seattle, Seattle (Lake City)

If you’ve been craving authentic German baking (or didn’t know you were until right now), Kaffeeklatsch is your answer. This family-owned cafe has been slinging traditional German pastries, pretzels, bread, and cakes in Lake City since 2011, and they’re serious about both quality and community. Grab a pretzel that’ll transport you straight to Bavaria, or settle in with a slice of cake and a coffee while soaking up the cozy European vibes. Can’t make it to their Lake City spot? Keep an eye out for them at local farmers markets around Seattle—they pop up at Capitol Hill, Lake City, and Magnolia. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 8 a.m.- 4 p.m., so you have plenty of chances to treat yourself. Your taste buds will danke you.

Cakes by Frosted, Edmonds

Got a birthday, anniversary, wedding, or just a really good Tuesday that needs celebrating? Cakes by Frosted has you covered. Stefanie’s been baking from scratch since she was a kid, learning from her Italian mother, and after years as a pastry chef and catering manager, she launched Cakes by Frosted in 2010—and we’re all better for it. Her custom cakes and cupcakes are made with serious skill and love, which is why she’s on our events’ preferred vendor list at Workhorse. Plus, she’s just a few blocks away inside HERO Ace Hardware, so picking up your order is majorly convenient. Fair warning: these aren’t all grab-and-go treats (she often has mini cupcakes you can grab in a pinch). Each order is customized and made to order, so give her at least two weeks’ notice to work her magic. Trust us, it’s worth the wait—and the perfect excuse to plan your next celebration.

Grand Pere Bakery, Mountlake Terrace

If you’ve ever been to Yeh-Yeh’s (and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?), you already know that Chris Lee doesn’t mess around when it comes to food. He and his brother Dennis opened Grand Pere Bakery in 2014, and they’ve been perfecting the art of French baking ever since. We’re talking fresh-baked croissants, French pastries, cookies, and bread—all made from scratch using recipes the brothers developed themselves. Pair your pastry with a hand-crafted Italian espresso drink made with Attibassi coffee (a masterful Italian roast with zero bitterness), and you’ve got yourself a perfect morning. The cafe has a lovely sit-down area with free WiFi, so it’s ideal for working a little before settling into your seat at Workhorse, meeting up with friends, or just treating yourself to a quiet moment with something delicious. And if you need a special order? Just call a day ahead and they’ll bake it fresh for you the next morning.

Red Twig Bakery + Cafe, Edmonds

Red Twig has been a downtown Edmonds staple since 2004. This cozy cafe-bakery-roaster does it all: they roast their own proprietary coffee blend on-site, bake fresh pastries from scratch daily, and serve simple, flavorful brunch and lunch made with local, sustainable ingredients. We’re big fans—so much so that Red Twig has been fueling many of our Lunch & Learns at Workhorse. Their counter-service setup is effortless (order, grab a seat, they bring the food to you), and whether you’re popping in for a quick espresso or settling in for a full meal, it just feels good to be there. Plus, they walk the walk when it comes to community: Red Twig donates more than $10,000 annually to local programs and organizations. So yeah, when you eat and drink well here, you’re also doing good things. Open seven days a week, and online ordering is available if you’re in a rush.

Rila Bakery and Cafe, Lynnwood

Rila Bakery and Cafe made waves in 2024 when owner Sam Loh reluctantly hopped on the smashed croissant trend—and we’re so glad he did. After seeing the viral sensation all over TikTok (particularly out of Korea), Sam was skeptical. Why would anyone flatten those perfectly laminated layers that bakers work so hard to create? But his girlfriend convinced him to give it a shot, and the result—two pressed croissants with an Earl Grey and apricot filling sandwiched between—became an overnight sensation. An influencer visit later, and Rila was selling out daily. But it’s not just about the viral moment. Sam opened Rila in 2016 with a mission to create sweet, light pastries with flavors you’ll never get tired of, plus quality coffee and tea in a relaxed, comfortable space. The bakery survived the pandemic’s dark days and is still going strong, making specialty pastries that are as delicious as they are Instagram-worthy. Open Wednesday through Sunday, 7 a.m.- 2 p.m. (or until sold out—so get there early).

Rise and Shine Bakery, Lynnwood

Rise and Shine is the passion project of chef Mai Tran, who opened her shop in 2010 to share her Vietnamese cuisine with the community—we’re all lucky she did. Mai does everything herself: baking fresh banh mi bread daily, grilling every piece of meat, and crafting pastries with the kind of attention to detail that makes her work unmistakable. Seattle Times food critic Tan Vinh said it best after eating at 100 banh mi spots across the region: he could pick Mai’s handiwork out of any sandwich lineup. She chops off both ends of the bread so your first bite is all meat and filling, uses a 2:1 daikon-to-carrot pickle ratio for maximum flavor, and bakes her own bread because she doesn’t trust anyone else to get it right. After years in Shoreline, Mai moved to a larger Lynnwood location in 2021 with indoor seating—so now you can sit down and savor every perfectly crafted bite.

BONUS: Shouts to Three North Seattle Bakeries
Okay, these bakeries are so good and close enough to the top of Seattle’s border (aka North Seattle, but not north of Seattle, feel?) that we had to give them a moment to shine. If you live in Seattle, or plan to explore beyond our earlier bounds, add the following four spots to your list:
Ben’s Bread Co. (Phinney) is a family-run bakery crafting small-batch, naturally-leavened breads and pastries using locally grown ingredients, with a portion of proceeds donated annually to community organizations—expect sourdough loaves, English muffins, cookies, and more that showcase the region’s finest grains and produce. Oh, and Wednesday pizza nights!
Coyle’s Bakeshop (Greenwood) specializes in handmade pastries, cakes, tarts, and savories inspired by French, English, and American baking traditions, with seasonal menus crafted by owner Rachael Coyle, a former pastry chef at the Herbfarm, Columbia City Bakery, and Le Pichet.
Petit Pierre (Phinney Ridge & Magnolia) is a family-owned French bakery where everything is mixed, shaped, and baked in-house daily using the finest French ingredients and classic techniques—your warm, welcoming neighborhood spot for pastries and desserts for any occasion.
Sea Wolf Bakers (Fremont) is a brother-owned bakery churning out handcrafted, seasonally rotating breads and pastries made with local ingredients in a welcoming space—founded in 2014 by Jesse and Kit Schumann, who were born and raised in Northwest Washington.
