Why Edmonds Is a Great Running Town
The Edmonds waterfront is beautiful, sure, and it’s super functional for runners. You get a mix of paved paths, trail runs, and neighborhood loops, all within a compact area that doesn’t require an hour drive to reach. Plus, the community here is supportive. Local running groups meet regularly, and you’ll see other runners everywhere, which creates a special energy that makes you want to push a little harder.
Research shows that running in natural, scenic environments reduces perceived effort and increases enjoyment—which means the Edmonds waterfront and surrounding trails are doing half the work for you.

Best Routes by Type and Terrain
Paved Routes for Easy Runs
The Edmonds waterfront is your go-to for easy, scenic paved running. Starting at the ferry terminal and running north along the water, this flat path gives you unobstructed views and a smooth surface. It’s perfect for recovery runs or building base miles. You can easily adjust the distance depending on your goals—hit the pier and turn back, or extend north toward Lynnwood. While the road is busy, running up Olympic View Drive is a gorgeous experience that gives you some uphill gains.
Focusing entirely downtown is another solid paved option. Starting at Edmonds Park & Ride, jog through the heart of downtown, past galleries and shops, and around to the waterfront. It’s about 2-3 miles depending on how many side streets you include. If your not as into running but still looking for a great workout check out Edmonds best workout classes!
Trail Runs
If paved paths feel too tame, Yost Park gives you trail running without being too technical. The paths wind through trees and over streams with some elevation gain to keep things interesting. It’s close to downtown and offers the best of both worlds: nature and accessibility.
Running around the Edmonds Marsh is quieter and more contemplative. This short trail through the marsh is great for adding elevation and forest running to an otherwise paved route, or for a standalone meditative run.
Hills and Variety
Want to work on your hill game? The neighborhood streets above downtown (Emerald Hills, anyone? Seaview counts, too!) have rolling hills with ocean views. It’s harder running, but the payoff is worth it.
For pure elevation gain, venture slightly north to the areas around Westgate—these neighborhoods have sustained climbs that’ll build strength and speed.

Best Routes by Runner Type
Best for Beginners
Start with the Edmonds waterfront. It’s flat, gorgeous, and you can make it as short or long as you want. Water views are motivating, and the gentle terrain builds confidence.
Best for Longer Steady Runs
The Edmonds-to-Lynnwood route is perfect for longer runs. You can go 4-6 miles out and back with zero elevation gain, meaning you can focus on distance instead of struggling with hills. Run from Workhorse to Cottage, Community Bakery in Perrinville and back, and reward yourself with a pastry at your turnaround point. Plus, South County Park is on your way if you want to dig into the woods for some extra credit trail running.
Best for Runners Who Want Hills
Head to the neighborhoods above downtown or try a loop that combines the flat waterfront with the climbing streets. This gives you the scenic reward at the beginning and the strength work at the end.
Best for Scenic Recovery Runs
Whitney’s Workhorse Walking Route (shared below) doubles as a perfect recovery run. You get beach, ferry, views, manageable distance, and built-in stops for coffee or water.
Whitney’s Workhorse Walking Route
One of our favorite routes in Edmonds comes from Whitney Popa, Workhorse’s video star. She’s been logging miles through downtown Edmonds for years, and her route is specifically designed to hit the best parts of our beachfront while staying manageable for morning runs before work.
Start at Workhorse (on Main & 2nd), head down Sunset, back to Brackett’s Landing, down Olympic Beach, to the Pier, through Marina Beach Park, and back to the ferry terminal in one big loop. Once you get back to Main, head back toward Workhorse. Total distance: about 3 miles. Bonus: You can walk up to Starbucks or even Stillhouse for a fancy coffee and extra steps. What to Expect Before You Go
Parking and Access Points
The Brackett’s Landing parking lot is your main hub for waterfront running. It fills up on weekdays during work commutes, so arrive early or use one of the side streets. Yost Park has its own lot. For downtown running, street parking is plentiful, especially early morning.
Restrooms and Water
The ferry terminal has restrooms. Yost Park has facilities. Most downtown spots (coffee shops, galleries) are friendly about letting runners refill water bottles.
